Mud Bucket Project to Help Flood Victims

April showers bring May flowers and with spring come floods. Once the floodwaters start draining away, the hard work of salvaging what is left, cleaning up and recovering from nature’s damage begins. After the flood, it takes a long time before lives can get back to some new form of normal. In areas hard hit by flooding, it is almost impossible to find even the most basic of services or supplies. You can’t just run down to the local market or hardware store to buy cleaning supplies, they were flooded out too. You can’t just start cleanup by putting muddy clothes or bedding in the washer; the flood took out all the electricity. And you can’t just stand there helplessly and watch your home and all your belongings start to stink and rot away. Help is needed and that’s where our mud bucket project comes in.

The Presbyterian Church of Easton invites individuals and other local churches to join us in filling five gallon buckets filled with the basic cleaning supplies to help flood victims start cleaning their house and taking back their lives after flooding. Each 5 gallon bucket will be filled with basic and essential cleaning supplies that can be used in areas still recovering from the ravages of flood. We have a “shopping list” of sponges, scrub brushes, detergent, clothes pins, line and other practical supplies to pack in each bucket. See the list below.

Items are sized to get the largest number and widest variety of practical cleaning supplies into each bucket. Once buckets are filled, they will be sealed and taken across the Bridge to the Church World Service (CWS) Warehouse in New Windsor, Maryland. The warehouse is a regional collection and distribution point for emergency supplies. CWS loads the mud buckets on trucks and sends the supplies off to locations where they are needed. CWS distributes over 5,000 mud buckets to flood areas each year and our buckets go into the warehouse until needed.

Please join with us by collecting supplies and filling mud buckets to help those people affected by floods. Each bucket, when filled, costs about $55.00. Shopping lists for mud bucket cleanup items including quantities and sizes that fit in a 5 gallon bucket are available at the church office 617 North Washington Street. Contributions or donated supplies can be dropped off at the church. For more information, call the Presbyterian Church of Easton at 410-822- 3324
