How did a poor, uneducated son of a carpenter from an outback town come to be accepted as the Lord and creator of all things, a member of the divine Trinity? Is this a question you have ever contemplated? “The entire story of how Jesus became God is of paramount importance not only to those interested in the Christian religion for personal or historical reasons but also for everyone who has the slightest interest in history.

If Jesus had not been declared God at his Resurrection, his followers would have remained a small sect within Judaism whose leader ended-up on the wrong side of the law and was crucified for his efforts. The massive conversion of Gentiles to belief in Christ would never have happened. Centuries later, the Roman empire would never have adopted Christian beliefs and ways. The Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Reformation, and modernity as we know it would never have transpired. And most of us would still be pagan. It is for this reason that there are indeed few questions in the entire history of civilization as important as this one: How did Jesus become God?” (From the introduction to the program.)

The Sunday Study Group will be viewing and discussing a DVD lecture course, “How Jesus Became God” by Professor Bart Ehrman. Dr. Ehrman has a M.Div. and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary and is currently professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Ehrman’s approach is purely as a historian; it is not theological and does not attribute anything to acts of God. It is based solely on historical records and conclusions that can be
drawn from them.

The study will begin on Sunday October 22 with the showing of the first DVD lecture. Each lecture takes about 30 minutes. There will be time for comments and discussion at the conclusion of each lecture. There are 24 lectures in the series so this a very in-depth historical analysis. We will begin each DVD at 11:15. Watch for announcement of location which will depend on how many people are interested in participating.
